China Seeks Public Feedback on Draft Safety Standards for Children’s Smartwatches

On May 13, 2025, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released a draft of a new mandatory national standard titled “Safety Technical Requirements for Children’s Wristwatches” and began soliciting public comments. The consultation period lasts until June 12, 2025.

The proposed standard applies to wristwatches designed for children aged 3 to 14 years and outlines both general safety requirements—such as appearance and waterproof performance—and chemical safety specifications, including limits on hazardous substances like lead, cadmium, mercury, and hexavalent chromium, as well as migratable substances such as antimony (Sb) and arsenic (As).
