India to mandate energy labeling for deep freezers

On February 1, 2023, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) of India promulgated the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (Particulars and Manner of their Display on Labels of Deep Freezers) Regulations, 2023, to transition Deep Freezers, which had been optional products of the energy efficiency labeling system “Standards & Labeling Programme”, to products subject to labeling obligations. The amended bill was announced on June 28, 2022, and opinions were solicited, targeting hard-top and glass-top deep freezers. On February 6, 2023, the Ministry of Power issued a notification stipulating new energy conservation standards to be applied from July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2025. In addition to the energy conservation standards, this notification also stipulates compliance with the safety requirements in accordance with the provisions of the applicable Quality Control Order and the performance requirements of the Indian Standard IS7872.
