India’s Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has notified the Environment Protection (Management of Contaminated Sites) Rules, 2025 on July 24, 2025, effective immediately. The rules stipulated soil, ground water and surface water pollution standards where suspected sites where standards are not met will be subject to sampling assessment by authorities. The sites which fail the standards will become a “contaminated site” where the person responsible for the site are required to carry out remediation at their own expense. A total of 189 substances are listed as pollutants, including five types of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances).
