India’s Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) issued the “Guidelines for Acceptance of Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) as Food Contact Material” on May 23, 2025. These guidelines are based on the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) First Amendment Regulations, 2025, which now only allows recycled PET as food contact materials made with recycled plastics. The guidelines is a supplement the amendment and specifies obligations for producers of recycled PET food packaging materials regarding testing, compliance with Indian standards, applications to authorities, and labeling requirements. Notably, the guidelines apply exclusively to food contact recycled PET derived from post-consumer PET used for food purposes and are not applicable to resin derived from non-food-contact packaging.
