India Enforces Benefit Sharing System for Utilization and Access to Biological Resources

On April 29, 2025, the National Biodiversity Authority of India notified and enforced the 2025 Biological Diversity (Access to Biological Resources and Knowledge Associated thereto and Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits) Regulations, 2025. These rules stipulate that when biological resources are utilized for commercial purposes, a progressive fee based on the user’s turnover will be levied to ensure equitable utilization of biological resources, as well as their digital sequence related data and associated knowledge.
