India to mandate energy-saving labeling for Light Commercial Air Conditioners

On August 24, 2022, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) of India announced proposed regulations “Bureau of Energy Efficiency (Particulars and Manner of their Display on Labels of Light Commercial Air Conditioners) Regulations, 2022” to make labeling of light commercial air conditioners, which are optional target products, mandatory under the energy saving labeling system “Standards & Labeling Programme”, and is soliciting opinions for 30 days. The proposed regulations specify the items to be displayed on the label, the design of the label, the label validity period, etc., and the new energy saving standards are stipulated in a separate circular issued by the Ministry of Power.

The current scheme covers direct airflow single-phase and three-phase single-split (fixed and variable speed) light commercial air conditioners manufactured, commercially purchased or sold in India, or imported into India that are steam compressed air conditioners covered by the Indian Standard IS1391 (Part 2): 2018 with a rated output of more than 10.5 kW to 18.0 kW.
