India, Drafts Amendment to Extend Vehicle Age Limits by 5 Years for EV, Hydrogen, and CNG Commercial Vehicles

On August 10, 2026, India's Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) published a notification regarding a proposed amendment to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. The proposed amendment includes a five-year extension of the registration validity period for electric vehicles (EVs), hydrogen vehicles, and CNG (natural gas) commercial vehicles, as well as digitization of the application process in conjunction with the VAHAN portal. Following a 30-day public comment period from the date of publication, the amendment is expected to come into formal effect upon final publication in the official gazette.
