On March 3, 2022, the China Electronics Standardization Institute announced a solicitation for opinions regarding the RoHS-related industry standard “Measurement of seven phthalates used in electrical and electronic devices: High-performance liquid chromatography” and began soliciting opinions. The deadline for opinions is April 8. The standard was developed to promote the spread of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), which causes less pollution, is easier to operate, and is less costly than the traditional measurement method GC-MS. The standard specifies the method for measuring the content of seven phthalates (DIBP, DBP, BBP, DEHP, DNOP, DINP, DIDP) used in electrical and electronic devices using high-performance liquid chromatography, and applies to 11 items of the EU RoHS 2 Directive [2011/65/EU].
Scope of Application
The standard specifies the method for measuring the content of seven phthalates (DIBP, DBP, BBP, DEHP, DNOP, DINP, DIDP) used in electrical and electronic devices using high-performance liquid chromatography and applies to the measurement of the content of seven phthalates used in electrical and electronic devices subject to RoHS regulation (11 items of the EU RoHS 2 Directive [2011/65/EU]). Testing based on the standard must be performed by trained test personnel.
The seven phthalates are as shown in the table below.
Number |
Name | Abbreviation |
CAS Number |
1 | Diisobutyl phthalate | DIBP | 84-69-5 |
2 | Dibutyl phthalate | DBP | 84-74-2 |
3 | Butyl benzyl phthalate | BBP | 85-68-7 |
4 | Di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate | DEHP | 117-81-7 |
5 | Di-n-octyl phthalate | DNOP | 117-84-0 |
6 | Di-iso-nonyl phthalate | DINP | 68515-48-0 |
7 | Di-iso-decyl phthalate | DIDP | 26761-40-0 |
Quantitation Limit (QL)
The quantitation limits of the seven phthalates are as follows.
- Solid samples: DIBP, DBP, BBP, DEHP, and DNOP at 10 mg/kg and DINP and DIDP at 50 mg/kg.
- Fluid samples: BBP, DIBP, DBP, DEHP, DNOP at 10 mg/kg and DINP and DIDP at 50 mg/kg.
