India India BEE changes energy efficiency standards etc for ceiling fans

On July 24, 2019, India’s Bureau of Energy Efficiency announced changes the existing specifications of ceiling fans, one of the eligible products for which labeling is optional under the “Standards & Labeling Programme”, an energy saving labeling scheme. The changes are based on a decision taken at the 5th Technical Committee meeting on February 15, 2019.

 

The main contents are as follows (some excerpts).

  • Applicable to ceiling fans with any size of blades (e.g. 900mm, 1050mm, 1200mm, 1400mm, 1500mm etc. as per Indian Standard IS374: 2019).
  • The star rating applicable to each blade size, as described in the specifications for ceiling fans (see Schedule-8), will apply from August 1, 2019 through June 30, 2022.

 

For sweep size < 1200 mm:

Star rating Service value
1 star ≥ 3.1 to < 3.6
2 star ≥ 3.6 to < 4.1
3 star ≥ 4.1 to < 4.6
4 star ≥ 4.6 to < 5.1
5 star ≥ 5.1

 

For sweep size ≥ 1200 mm:

Star rating Service value
1 star ≥ 4.0 to < 4.5
2 star ≥ 4.5 to < 5.0
3 star ≥ 5.0 to < 5.5
4 star ≥ 5.5 to < 6.0
5 star ≥ 6.0

 

  • For those already approved for labeling on the BEE database, an application for continuation of using the label must be made prior to August 25, 2019 at the online application window (a dedicated portal is available). Submitting documents to BEE directly is also available.
  • For stock that complies with the existing standards, it may be sold for three months from August 1, 2019.
  • Test reports submitted on or after November 1, 2019 must be in accordance with IS 374:2019.
