India issues changes to energy efficiency label specifications for LPG stoves and water heaters

At the end of June 2021, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) of India issued instructions on the extension of label validity and new energy consumption standards for household LPG stoves and water storage electric water heaters, which are products covered under the Standards & Labeling Programme. The details are as follows.

Household LPG Stoves (under Voluntary Scheme)

  • Extend the expiration date of the energy-saving label to December 31, 2021 (Existing energy efficiency label has been valid from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2021).
  • Product models that have already been approved by BEE and wish to continue to be labeled after June 30, 2021, must upload the approval letter and a sample label to the dedicated portal site and follow the prescribed procedures.

Storage Type Electric Water Heater (under Mandatory Scheme)

  • In accordance with the official gazette notification dated December 10, 2020, the existing energy consumption standard would expire on June 30, 2021, and the new standard will be applied from July 1, 2021 (i.e., prohibition of products with 1-star rating to be put on the market).
