Macau to Ban Import and Export of 14 Mercury-Added Products Starting 2026

On June 16, 2025, the Environmental Protection Bureau of the Macau Special Administrative Region announced that it will prohibit the import, export, and transshipment of 14 types of mercury-added products starting January 1, 2026, under Chief Executive Order No. 109/2025.

The regulation is part of Macau’s implementation of amendments to the Minamata Convention on Mercury, which aims to reduce global mercury pollution. The banned items include various types of batteries, fluorescent lamps, switches, relays, and measuring instruments. However, mercury-added products used for research, calibration, or as reference standards are exempt from the ban.
