India exempts labelling requirements for plastic packaging materials used in imported products

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change of India published and enforced the Plastic Waste Management (Second Amendment) Rules, 2022 on July 7, 2022. This amendment exempts labelling requirements for plastic packaging materials used in imported products and amends the provisions of the protocols for compostable and biodegradable plastic materials to clarify Indian standards and interim measures that must be complied with. In addition, provisions for environmental compensation were added for failure to comply with the provisions of the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016 and its amendments. The amount of environmental compensation shall be determined by the guidelines separately issued by the Central Pollution Control Board.
