South Korean MOE to exempt companies with annual sales of less than $36 million from disposable transport packaging regulation

On June 24, 2024, the Ministry of Environment (MOE) of South Korea announced a draft version of partial amendment to the Regulation on Standards for Product Packaging Materials and Packaging Methods. This amendment is intended to exempt small and medium enterprises with annual sales of less than KRW 50 billion (approx. USD 36 million) generating a small amount of delivery packaging waste from the scope of mandatory disposable packaging methods and standards. This is expected to reduce the burden on small traders (self-employed and other small businesses) improving administrative efficiency. The proposed amendment will be on preliminary notice of legislation from June 24 to August 5, 2024.
