Green Public Procurement rules started in Indonesia

On February 26, 2019, the Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry No. 5 of 2019 on applying the green labels for the procurement of eco-friendly goods and services was enacted in Indonesia and came into effect on the same day. This regulation is a first-of-its-kind law that particularly stipulates the green public procurement in the nation.

The original text of this regulation is downloadable at the following URL.

Regulated products

The following list is regulated products written in this regulation. The green label is also designated for each product. For example, for “air conditioners,” the energy-saving label set by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of Indonesia is designated (see below).

    • Copy papers
    • Plastic files
    • Wood for furniture
    • Hybrid autoclaves (medical waste treatment equipment)
    • Hybrid microwaves (medical waste treatment equipment)
    • Air-conditioners

These designated products will be used as a first step to promote the green public procurement (GPP) by governmental agencies/organizations/local offices in Indonesia. Under the provision of the regulation, since the list of the regulated products will be updated annually, it is expected to gradually expand it to other products in the future.
