On September 22, 2025, the Ministry of Trade of Indonesia published the “Ministry of Trade Regulation No. 32/2025 amending the Ministry of Trade Regulation No. 20/2025 on the Import Policy and Regulation of Chemical Substances, Hazardous Materials, and Mineral Resources." This amendment adds three "ethanol"-related items as hazardous substances under Regulation No. 20/2025. The goal of this amendment is to restrict the import of ethanol as means to protect the domestic sugarcane industry, as sugarcane is the raw material for ethanol including in forms such as bioethanol. This amended regulation will be enforced on October 6, 2025, fourteen days after its publication.
