India Revises Green Credit Methodology of Tree Plantation Activity

On August 29, 2025, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) issued a notification to revise the methodology for calculating Green Credits (GC) under tree plantation activities, under the Green Credit Rules, 2023. The previous requirement of planting 1,100 trees per hectare has been replaced with a new criteria based on canopy density of minimum 40%. The notification repeals the previous one announced on February 22, 2024, where activities conducted or approved prior to the repeal will remain valid.
