Indonesia Suspends Operations of Two Coal-Related Companies for Causing Decline in an Endangered Dolphin Species

On February 7, 2026, Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and the Environmental Management Agency (KLH/BPLH) announced that it had imposed strict administrative sanctions—specifically, suspension of operations—on two companies in East Kalimantan. The ministry determined that the companies had caused river pollution without obtaining the required environmental permits and had contributed to the decline of the rare Mahakam River Irrawaddy dolphin (Pesut Mahakam, Orcaella brevirostris).
