Japan’s Consumer Affairs Agency Publishes First “Environmental Label Fact‑Finding Report” in 25 Years

On August 20, 2026, Japan’s Consumer Affairs Agency released the Environmental Label FactFinding Report, which examines how businesses use environmental claims from the perspective of the Act against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations and summarizes the Agency’s views under the Act. As public interest in climate change and other environmental issues grows and consumer environmental awareness increases, the use of environmental labels—visual indicators that products or services are environmentally conscious—has expanded. At the same time, because label space is limited, inadequate disclosure can mislead consumers and create risks of greenwashing.
