China revises safety standard on Li-ion batteries for portable electronic devices

On Dec. 29, 2022, China’s Standardization Administration issued a mandatory national standard for the safety of lithium-ion batteries and battery packs for portable electronic products (GB 31241-2022). This is a revision of the 2014 version of the standard. It will come into effect Jan. 1, 2024. The revised standard includes updated definitions of “lithium-ion battery” and other terms; new items that should be displayed on products; and changed requirements for product safety tests.
