China’s Hainan Province updates list of plastic products that cannot be produced, sold or used

China’s Hainan Province on August 16 released the second version of the List of Non-biodegradable, Single-use Plastic Products Banned for Production, Sale and Use in Hainan Province (the “List”) to step up its effort to control waste plastic pollution. It came into effect on September 1.

The new List has added section 1.3 to the previous version as shown in the table below, which lists all the banned items.

1. Single-use sheets and bags containing non-biodegradable materials, such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET)

1.1 Packaging bags

1.1.1 Shopping bags

1.1.2 Daily-use plastic bags

1.1.3 Plastic-paper composite bags

1.2 Garbage bags

1.3 Food contact plastic bags (including bags for food preservation)

1.3.1  Portable food contact plastic bags (including bags for food preservation)

2. Single-use tableware containing non-biodegradable materials, such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET)

2.1 Boxes (including lids)

2.2 Bowls (including lids)

2.3 Dishes

2.4 Plates

2.5 Cups (including lids)

2.6 Straws
