China CHEAA issues group standard to regulate recycled plastics used in home appliances

On August 5, 2024, the China Household Electrical Appliances Association (CHEAA) issued a group standard called “Technical specifications of recycled plastics for home appliances” (T/CHEAA 0034-2024). Although this standard is not a mandatory standard, it is suggested that household electrical appliance manufacturers follow the standard when using recycled plastics. The standard specifies the requirements for the use of recycled plastics, such as the origin of raw materials, restricted substances and performance standards, as well as calculation methods for the addition rate, quality control and labeling requirements. In addition, Annex B also lists the target additive rate of post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastics for major home appliances.

Terms and definitions

According to the definition of terms in the standard, both of Post-Consumer Recycled plastics and Post-Industrial Recycled plastics are included in the recycled plastics regulated by the standard.

  • Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) plastics: Recycled plastics are made from waste plastics after distribution, consumption and use.
  • Post-Industrial Recycled (PIR) plastics: Recycled plastics are made from waste plastics generated from industrial processes. It should be noted that plastics which can be reused in the same production process are not included.
