On November 11, 2021, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Vietnam released the “2016-2020 National Environmental Assessment Report.” This report summarizes the current status of water, air, soil environmental quality, biodiversity, and solid waste management as a result of Vietnam’s economic and social development over the past five years. In addition, the report also describes various problems that are emerging, future issues for environmental protection, and proposals for measures to curb environmental pollution.
The report consists of the following 10 chapters:
Chapter 1: Summary of Economic and Social Development and Environmental Impacts
Chapter 2: Climate Change and Natural Disasters
Chapter 3: Generation and Treatment of Solid Waste and Hazardous Waste
Chapter 4: Water Environment
Chapter 5: Atmospheric Environment
Chapter 6: Soil Environment
Chapter 7: Biodiversity
Chapter 8: Environmental Pollution Effects
Chapter 9: Environmental Management
Chapter 10: Current Issues and Environmental Protection Policies for the Next Five Years
Economic growth in Vietnam fell to 2.91% in 2020 due to COVID-19, but was 6.80%/year in 2016-2019. Due to this rapid development of economic activities, the amount of waste generated has increased significantly, which has a great impact on the environment. As a result, the following types of environmental pollution are becoming more serious:
-
- Pollution of the water environment by rivers flowing through urban areas and traditional craft villages
- Air pollution in large cities and industrial parks
- Soil contamination by residual pesticides
- Natural disasters caused by climate change
On the other hand, various environmental protection measures have been implemented over the past five years, mainly the following activities, and some results have been achieved:
-
- Surveillance of facilities with high risk of environmental pollution and treatment of facilities with severe environmental pollution
- Treatment of contaminated areas with residual contaminants
- Building environmentally friendly manufacturing models in urban, rural, and industrial areas, and traditional craft villages
- Improvement of collection and processing rates of urban household waste
- Increased introduction of centralized wastewater treatment systems in industrial parks
In addition, the report describes that environmental violations are also decreasing year by year as environmental awareness is increased by amending and supplementing the legal system of environmental management regulations, including the 2020 Environmental Protection Law.
