Malaysia sets MEPS for microwave ovens and electric rice cookers

Guidelines regarding Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for microwave ovens and electric rice cookers were released in Malaysia. Both guidelines prescribe the definitions of target products, MEPS, energy efficiency label standards, testing standards, etc.

Microwave oven

The formula for calculating the efficiency (η) of microwave ovens is as follows.

Pt: Power consumption

Win: Energy required to heat up the magnetron filame

The following two must be referred to for testing the efficiency.

    • MS IEC 62301:2012 Household electrical appliances – Measurement of standby power
    • IEC 60705:2010 Household microwave ovens – Methods for measuring performance

The rating of energy efficiency labels is evaluated by 5 stars, and the corresponding efficiency is shown in the table below. 2-star in the table below is set as MEPS.

Star rating

Efficiency

5-star

65% ≤ η

4-star

58% ≤ η < 65%

3-star

53% ≤ η < 58%

2-star

45% ≤ η < 53%

1-star

η < 45%

The design for the labels is as shown in the figure below.

Electric rice cooker

The formula for calculating the efficiency (η) of electric rice cookers is as follows.

The volume of water before test (G)

The initial water temperature before test (T1)

The highest water temperature after test (T2)

Energy consumption (E) (unit: Wh)

The following must be referred to for testing the efficiency.

    • MS 2024:2020 Electric Rice Cooker for household use – Method of measuring the performance

The rating of energy efficiency labels is evaluated by 5 stars, and the efficiency corresponding to the rated power (P, unit: W) is shown in the table below. 2-star in the table below is set as MEPS.

Star rating

Efficiency

P ≤ 400

400 < P ≤ 600 600 < P ≤ 800 800 < P ≤ 1000

1000 < P ≤ 2000

5-star 85% ≤ η 87% ≤ η 89% ≤ η 91% ≤ η 93% ≤ η
4-star 80% ≤ η 81% ≤ η 82% ≤ η 83% ≤ η 84% ≤ η
3-star 75% ≤ η 76% ≤ η 77% ≤ η 78% ≤ η 79% ≤ η
2-star 70% ≤ η 71% ≤ η 72% ≤ η 73% ≤ η 74% ≤ η
1-star 65% ≤ η 66% ≤ η 67% ≤ η 68% ≤ η 69% ≤ η

The design for the labels is the same as that of microwave ovens.
