On April 20, 2026, the nonprofit organization Shift and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) released a report underscoring the importance of measuring “just transition” in climate‑change mitigation. Advancing the climate transition toward decarbonization requires expanding the use of renewable energy, as well as increasing the extraction of minerals such as lithium and copper used in related equipment. Because these activities involve large‑scale land use, insufficient engagement with local communities can trigger opposition, raising the risk that projects will be delayed or canceled. At the same time, companies often lack adequate data to understand how workers and communities are being affected, making risk management difficult. In response, Shift and WBCSD introduced a set of nineteen “Just Transition Metrics,” a cross‑sector framework for assessing the risks and opportunities associated with the transition.
