Chinese institute publishes draft association standards for carbon footprint quantification of storage devices, servers

On Aug. 16, 2024, the China Electronics Standardization Institute publishes two draft association standards that set out methods and requirements for the carbon footprint quantification of storage devices and servers, respectively. These drafts specify how to quantify carbon footprint, including what data to factor in. The institute is seeking comments on the drafts through Sept. 12, 2024.

Outline of the draft standard for the carbon footprint quantification of storage devices

Scope of the standard

The standard would govern the carbon footprint quantification and assessment of storage devices, including HDDs, SSDs and flash memory devices.

System boundaries for quantification

Carbon footprint quantification would be done for the following stages of product lifecycle: raw material procurement, production, transportation, use and end-of-life.
