Singapore raises maximum fines for non-compliance with laws to further strengthen occupational safety and health

On May 27, 2024, the Singapore Ministry of Manpower (MOM) announced that, because the country’s death and serious injury rate from occupational accidents in 2023 was the lowest ever recorded (excluding the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, when economic activity stopped), in order to further strengthen this culture and make it take root, it would strengthen fines for violations of occupational safety requirements and make the introduction of video surveillance systems on construction sites mandatory from June 1, 2024. A law to strengthen fines based on this announcement was also promulgated in the Official Gazette on the same day. These measures were first formulated by an occupational safety and health task force composed of multiple ministries.
