On Aug. 5, 2022, China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment and other government departments announced a Program for Ecological Protection of the Yellow River Basin. The program focuses on outstanding issues with the ecology and environment of the river basin and lays out five sets of measures, including the ecological protection and management of rivers and lakes. By 2025, It aims to ensure that 21.58% of the Yellow river basin is covered with forest, 67.64% of soil and water is preserved, 81.9% of water bodies (surface water) are evaluated as Class III or higher, and “lower Class V” water bodies are basically eliminated.
