China China issues revised mandatory standards for energy efficiency of air conditioners, heat pumps

On October 11, China’s State Administration for Market Regulation issued a revised version of mandatory national standards (GB standards) called the “Minimum allowable values of the energy efficiency and energy efficiency grades for multi-connected air-condition (heat pump) units”. These standards will come into effect on November 1, 2022, but won’t be applied to products produced or imported before the effective date, until 24 months after that date. Here is an overview of the standards.

Scope

The revised standards apply to air conditioners and heat pumps using an air-cooled or water-cooled condenser as well as low ambient temperature air source multi-zone air conditioners and heat pumps. The standards for low ambient temperature air source multi-zone air conditioners and heat pumps were first introduced by this revision.

Energy efficiency grades

The new version of the standards revises the criteria for energy efficiency grades of air conditioners and heat pumps. The table below shows the minimum energy efficiency ratios (EERs) and seasonal energy efficiency ratios (SEERs) for the grades of air source multi-zone air conditioners for cooling.

Nominal cooling capacity (CC) (W)

Energy efficiency grade

1 2

EER min. (W/W) SEER (W・h)/(W・h) EER min. (W/W) SEER (W・h)/(W・h) EER min. (W/W) SEER (W・h)/(W・h)
CC ≤ 14000 3.60 5.50 2.90 5.10 2.10 4.80
14000 < CC ≤ 28000 5.10 4.70 4.40
28000 < CC ≤ 50000 4.90 4.50 4.20
50000 < CC ≤ 68000 4.80 4.40 4.10
68000 < CC 4.70 4.30 4.00

The EER and SEER values of grade 3 set the overall minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) for the products.
