Partially Revising the Ministerial Ordinance for Establishing Effluent Standard

Japan, MOE revises provisional effluent standard of nitrogen

On September 24, 2021, the Ministry of the Environment of Japan promulgated the above ministerial ordinance. The ordinance will be enforced from October 1, 2021.

This revision is to establish provisional effluent standards for nitrogen in closed sea areas under the Water Pollution Control Act after the expiration of the current provisional measures, which will expire on September 30, 2021.

Summary of Revision

For natural gas mining for which the current provisional effluent standard has been set, the deadline for the application of the provisional effluent standard will be extended for two years (until September 30, 2023). There will be no change in the standard values.

The other four industries (livestock farming, cobalt oxide manufacturing, vanadium compound manufacturing, and molybdenum compound manufacturing) are not mentioned in this revision because the current deadline for application is September 30, 2023.
