China issues mandatory national standards for food-contact paper, bamboo, wood materials

On July 28, 2022, China’s National Health Commission and State Administration for Market Regulation jointly issued 36 mandatory national standards for food safety along with revision tables for three standards. These standards include a revision of a standard called “Food Safety National Standard — Food-contact Paper and Paperboard Materials and Products” (GB 4806.8-2022) and a new standard called “Food Safety National Standard — Food-contact Bamboo and Wood Materials and Products” (GB 4806.12-2022). The above two standards set out requirements for the physical and chemical properties (limits on leachable substances, residual chemicals and microorganisms), test methods and labeling of food-contact paper and paperboard materials and food-contact bamboo and wood materials, respectively. Here is an overview of the two standards.
