China to introduce data labeling rules for automated monitoring of pollutant discharge for more effective regulation

On July 19, 2022, China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment issued new rules for labeling automated monitoring data of pollutant discharge. The rules aim to help establish a system to ensure that abnormalities in automated monitoring data are promptly reported to each ecology and environment department in charge. This system would reduce the burden of companies while enhancing online law enforcement activities and regulation.

The above rules will come into effect Jan. 1, 2023 in sectors including waste-to-energy power generation, thermal power generation, cement industry and paper industry. Local governments can also apply them to other sectors provided they consider the circumstances.
