China issues revised mandatory standards for energy efficiency of fans

On October 11, China’s State Administration for Market Regulation issued a revised version of mandatory national standards (GB standards) called the “Minimum allowable values of energy efficiency and energy efficiency grades for electric fans”, which will come into effect on November 1, 2022. Here is an overview of the standards.

Scope

The revised standards apply to table fans, box fans, wall-mounted fans, floor fans, pedestal fans and ceiling fans powered by an AC or DC motor with a single-phase rated voltage of less than 250 V or another type of rated voltage of less than 480 V. The standards for DC motor fans were first introduced by this revision.

Energy efficiency grades

The new version of the standards revises the criteria for energy efficiency grades of fans as shown in the table below. Note that the lower limits of grade 3 have been raised from the draft version published for comments.

Fan types Dimension (mm) Energy efficiency (m3 / (minW))
Energy efficiency grade 1 Energy efficiency grade 2 Energy efficiency grade 3
Table fans, box fans, wall-mounted fans, floor fans and pedestal fans 200 ≥ 1.00 ≥ 0.70 ≥ 0.60
200 < X ≤ 230 ≥ 1.10 ≥ 0.84 ≥ 0.70
230 < X ≤ 250 ≥ 1.30 ≥ 0.95 ≥ 0.79
250 < X ≤ 300 ≥ 1.50 ≥ 1.05 ≥ 0.86
300 < X ≤ 350 ≥ 1.65 ≥ 1.15 ≥ 0.98
350 < X ≤ 400 ≥ 1.85 ≥ 1.35 ≥ 1.06
400 < X ≤ 450 ≥ 2.15 ≥ 1.50 ≥ 1.19
450 < X ≤ 500 ≥ 2.40 ≥ 1.55 ≥ 1.25
500 < X ≤ 600 ≥ 2.65 ≥ 1.70 ≥ 1.40

The following table shows the standby power criteria for the energy efficiency grades.

Energy efficiency grade Standby power (W)
Fans with an information/status display Fans without an information/status display
1 ≤ 1.8 ≤ 0.8
2
3 ≤ 2.0 ≤ 1.0

The lower limits of grade 3 in the two tables above set the overall minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) for fans.
