On March 21, 2023, the Singapore National Environment Agency (NEA) announced details about the beverage container deposit scheme. The scheme will commence on April 1, 2025, and the deposit amount will be 10 Singapore cents (about USD 0.75). The scheme aims to improve the recycling rate of beverage containers and covers plastic bottles of 150 ml to 3 L and metal cans. The full deposit is paid when a consumer returns an empty beverage container to a designated return location. The Resource Sustainability (Amendment) Bill, which enacts this system, was passed by Parliament on March 22, 2022.
