On March 26, 2024, South Korea's Ministry of Environment (MOE) signed an agreement with five electric vehicle (EV) battery recycling companies to launch a pilot project to certify recycled materials from used EV batteries. The agreement stems from the government's intention to support domestic recyclers and battery manufacturers for their import and export activities and to respond to other countries’ regulations on trading of goods. The key content of the agreement is the formation of a council among MOE and used EV battery recycling businesses in the country to implement a pilot project certifying recycled materials that utilizes existing waste management systems. The pilot project will run from April to December 2024.
