Hong Kong implements Enhanced Producer Responsibility Scheme on WEEE on July 1st, 2024

On June 25, 2024, the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) of Hong Kong announced that the Enhanced Producer Responsibility Scheme on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WPRS) will be implemented on July 1 this year. The enhanced WPRS was made based on the Product Eco-responsibility (Amendment) Bill 2023 passed on October 18, 2023. The Amendment Bill not only newly added stand-alone tumble dryers and dehumidifiers to items subject to the WPRS, but also extended the products scope of refrigerators and washing machines that have been regulated by the WPRS. Moreover, starting from July 1, suppliers (including manufacturers and importers) distributing the above-mentioned 4 types of products under the WPRS must first register with the EPD as a registered supplier before distributing such regulated products in Hong Kong.
