Fire-fighting foams containing PFAS to be prohibited in Singapore from 2026

On March 15, 2024, the National Environment Agency (NEA) of Singapore issued a circular notifying the prohibition of fire-fighting foams containing PFAS from 2026 onwards. This measure aligns with the Stockholm Convention, and on and after January 1, 2026, the import and use of fire-fighting foams containing “Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), its salts and related compounds” and “Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), its salts and related compounds” will be prohibited. However, fire-fighting foams will still be allowed to be used if the concentrations of the trace contaminants are below the specified threshold limits.
