Australian Senate Standing Committee Releases Report Recommending Stricter Regulation of Microplastics and PFAS

On May 26, 2026, the Community Affairs References Committee, established by the Senate of the Parliament of Australia, released a report on the human health impacts of microplastics and PFAS in Australia. The inquiry began on November 6, 2025, and included one call for public submissions, four public hearings, and one site visit. In the report, the committee put forward 12 recommendations to the federal government, including bans on products that serve as sources of microplastic and PFAS pollution and the strengthening of extended producer responsibility (EPR) schemes. The federal government will submit a document to the Senate within three months of the report's presentation, outlining its initial response and intentions regarding these recommendations.
