Korea plans to centralize purchase and lease of vehicles used by national agencies to shift to Type 1 low-emission vehicles

The Ministry of Environment of South Korea has given a legislative notice from October 20 to November 29, 2022, of the draft amendment to the “Enforcement Regulation of the Clean Air Conservation Act,” which focuses on raising the ratio of obligatory purchases and leases of zero-emission vehicles in the public sector. The main content of this draft amendment is to centralize the mandatory purchase and lease of Type 1 low-emission vehicles by the national government, municipalities, and public institutions, and to increase the ratio to 100 percent. On the other hand, reasonable improvements were made based on the opinions of experts and industry, etc. regarding matters where the application method needed to be simplified, or that required exceptions based on mismatches between the regulations and current conditions due to the development of technology among the regulations related to the atmospheric environment. This is in the context of the amendment of the Enforcement Regulation, which has improved the conditions for using zero-emission vehicles, resulting in the increase in the number of electric vehicles released and the spread of chargers.
