Malaysia adds mercury thermometers and mercury sphygmomanometers to prohibited imports

On May 23, 2024, the “Customs (Prohibition of Imports) (Amendment) (No. 2) Order 2024” was promulgated in Malaysia, and it came into effect on June 1, 2024. This order amends the “Customs (Prohibition of Imports) Order 2023” by introducing “item no. 17”, in the First Schedule which is a list of absolutely prohibited imports. Mercury thermometers and mercury sphygmomanometers have been added to this new item as “Products under the Minamata Convention”.

Mercury thermometers and mercury sphygmomanometers banned from import

In the First Schedule (Goods which is absolutely prohibited for import), a new item, “item No. 17” (Products under the Minamata Convention), has been added, and the following products have been included.

  • Mercury thermometers
  • Mercury sphygmomanometers

 

Importation of these products from all countries was prohibited from June 1, 2024.

 

Note that these two products are among the mercury-added products scheduled for phase-out under the Minamata Convention by 2020.
