Malaysia publishes summary of draft rules on emissions and noise from automobiles

The Malaysian Department of Environment has published a summary of revised draft rules on emissions and noise from automobiles and is soliciting comments from August 14 to September 9, 2023. The purpose of these revised draft rules is to combine the four existing relevant rules into one rule and to revise the standards for exhaust gas and noise from motorcycles, gasoline vehicles, and diesel vehicles. These standards have not been revised for nearly 20 years since the latest laws and regulations were enacted, so they are said to be unable to handle recent technological innovations. In addition, the revised draft rules propose to impose several new obligations on automobile manufacturers, assemblers, importers, and automobile drivers in regards to compliance with emissions and noise standards.

The following summarizes the main contents of the revised draft rules.
