UNEP Strengthens REDD+, the Global Framework for Addressing Deforestation and Forest Degradation

On February 5, 2026, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) highlighted the growing significance of REDD+—a global initiative designed to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from deforestation and forest degradation—on the TOPICS section of its official website. REDD+ supports countries in lowering emissions by protecting forests, managing them sustainably, and restoring degraded areas. UNEP aims to accelerate forest‑based climate action by helping countries develop emissions‑measurement systems and by providing technical support.
