Australia Decides to Support Green Aluminum Sector with $2 Billion in Grants

On January 20, 2025, the Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water (DCCEEW) of Australia announced a 2 billion AUD investment in green aluminum, produced using renewable energy. Australia is the world's sixth-largest aluminum producer, sees aluminum as a vital sector for its economy and employment. The grant aims to assist domestic aluminum smelters transitioning to renewable energy by 2036. Smelters can receive grants for each ton of clean aluminum produced. According to the DCCEEW, this initiative will help Australia: (1) expand its green footprint, (2) achieve net zero emissions by 2050, (3) utilize solar, wind, and critical mineral resources in aluminum production, (4) continuously develop skilled labor, and (5) create stable, high-wage employment across regions.
