Korea partly amends enforcement rules of Wastes Control Act

On February 6, 2024, the South Korean government promulgated and enforced an amendment to the Chemicals Control Act, exempting waste toxic substances from the scope of the Act. Accordingly, waste toxic substances, which are designated and controlled as “specific waste” under the Wastes Control Act, will be regulated only by the Wastes Control Act. Following this, the Ministry of Environment partly amended the Enforcement Rules of the Wastes Control Act stipulating standards and methods to be followed by those who intend to collect, transport, store, and dispose of waste toxic substances. The Enforcement Rules were promulgated and enforced as well.

The outline of the amendment made to the Enforcement Rules of the Wastes Control Act are as follows.
