South Korea starts to regulate import/export of all e-waste as per Basel Convention

On November 26, 2024, the Ministry of Environment (MOE) of South Korea announced the promulgation of the “Waste Items Subject to the Act on the Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal” (Ministry of Environment Notification No. 2024-240) for the purpose of reflecting amendments to the Basel Convention made in June 2022. Under this Notification, the Act on the Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal (hereinafter “the Act”), which domestically implements the Basel Convention, is revised to control all waste electrical and electronic products (hereinafter “e-waste”) as "waste items subject to import/export controls."
