South Korea revealed draft regulations on landfilling waste

On January 22, 2025, the Ministry of Environment (MOE) of South Korea announced the draft Act on the Advancement of Waste Landfill Facility Management System during the Ministerial Meeting on National Issues and Economy. The draft mainly proposes: (1) to intercept accident sources at private landfills and to strengthen response capabilities in case of accidents; (2) to strengthen the environmental monitoring system and to improve information transparency at private landfills, (3) to reuse landfills that are no longer in use as leisure space for residents and for industrial infrastructure facilities, and (4) to rationalize operation and management standards for landfill facilities in consideration of changes in waste properties and waste-related technologies.
